STEP
ONE - Title, Keywords, and Description
1. TITLE -
This is the Title of your web site and will be displayed
at the top of a visitors browser. Listed below are
some quick tips on designing your website title:
- Always
use your primary keywords in the title tag at least one
or more times.
- Try
to place your primary keywords at the start of the tag.
- Avoid
listing the same word multiple times in a row since some
engines may penalize for this. Instead, use the keyword
multiple times, but separate them by other words in your
text.
- Use
the longer form and the plural form of a keyword when
possible. For example, if you use marketing in your Title
tag, a search on marketing or market will yield a match
on most engines. However, words like companies will not
always yield a match on company since company is not
an exact "substring" of companies. In these
cases you'll want to try and use both forms of the word.
- Use
Upper/Lower case lettering for keywords in general. Example:
Blue Widgets are sold here!
- Longer
titles are generally better than shorter ones. However,
shorter ones can be used if you need to better emphasize
a keyword that is not ranking.
- Make
your title interesting and "compelling" to
the reader to convince them why they should click there.
Please
write your title below or e-mail to design@planetnet.com with
your company name and the word "TITLE" in the
subject line.

2. DESCRIPTION -
This is a 25 word/ 200 characters or less description of
your business. This description is placed as a hidden file
in your welcome page and is posted as the description when
your site is located by a search engine. Keep one eye on
the prominence and frequency of your keywords in the title
and description of your Web site and another eye on the
weight of these keywords as a percentage of the total number
of words that make up your first page. You'll need to keep
your third eye on the appeal of the statements you make
in your description of the Web site. You have more than
two eyes, don't you? All good Web marketing folks need
lots of eyes.
The
following title and description may get you a high ranking
for a keyword search on the word "mortgage":
!AAA
Mortgage banking, the Mortgage money lenders - Mortgage,
lenders, money, mortgages, mortgage money, mortgage loans,
home equity loans, mortgage money,
What
it says, however, is unappealing. Instead, look at another
site description that would also rank high, and see which
site you would be more likely to visit:
Mortgages
Applications Approved Overnight!! - Mortgages and mortgage
financing techniques that the larger banks just can't offer.
Learn the 8 important things to include on your application
so that your mortgage can be approved in 24 hours, even
if you have poor credit.
The
listing above has the word "mortgage" as the
first word of the title, the first word of the description
and repeats the word "mortgage" 4 times. The
difference is that this description is compelling, solves
a problem and offers "8 important things" or
pieces of information that could be valuable to consumers
visiting the site.
Be
sure to put some thought into this because this is whats
going to attract potential customers to your web site.

3. KEYWORDS -
These are words or phrases that describing your business
that search engines use to locate your web site. Keywords
are placed as hidden files in your welcome page and should
be organized in order of importance. Your (6) most important
keywords will be registered with over 200 search engines.
Please list your keywords below in order of importance.
Here's
the strategy we recommend:
- Brainstorm
on what general words apply to your industry and list
them all out in a word processor or on paper.
- Next,
conduct a search for a few of them on a major search
engine and then travel to the sites you find in that
search.
- View
the HTML source code for the page and write down the
keywords used in the Meta tags and any you see on the
visible page. You'll quickly find a variety of keywords
you hadn't considered before. This does not mean these
are the best keywords to target, but it can help you
in your brainstorming process.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you only write down words and phrases that specifically
apply to YOUR business! You don't want to waste time targeting keywords
that will not bring you high quality leads.
- At
this stage, most people would start GUESSING what keywords
and phrases people are most likely to search on. Don't
guess. Learn the most popular combinations by taking
the individual words and submitting them one at a time
into the
Goto.com Keyword Database. (Important: Enter only
a single word to get the most popular multi-word
phrases containing that term).
Separate
word pairs and phrases with commas.
STEP
THREE - Purpose
Indicate
purpose in order of importance, leaving blank those which
are not applicable. Place "1" next to most important
aims and a "2" next to secondary aims.
To sell products directly taking credit card information or checks over
the Internet.
To encourage potential customers to contact us by phone or mail to consummate
a sale.
To make available product information and price lists to distributors.
To make available product information and price lists to customers.
To strengthen brand identification.
